Donde los sueños se hacen realidad...

Castillo

Today I was dreaming... and I remembered my visit to the magic kingdom of Disney World during my stay in Orlando a couple of months ago. Even if I only had a couple of hours to visit this place, I couldn't leave the city without visiting the magic world of Walt Disney.

I wanted to see Cinderella's castle, which made me dream so many times when I was little. Who hasn't been bewitched one day by the wonderful stories of Walt Disney? When I was little, I used to daydream that I was a princess and the Prince Charming came to rescue me...

(English translation at the end of the post)

Sylvia inside the capsule

"If we die, we want the people to accept it. We are in a risky business... The conquest of Space is worth the risk of life." Gus Grissom, 1967.

_____
The one that appears in the first picture smiling is my dad. He was born in Paris and lived in France during his first 18 years of life. Now, he looks like in the picture but bigger, with less hair, but with the same smile. In Paris, since 1909, they celebrate the Paris Air Show Le Bourget every other year. His father used to take him there to see the planes, satellites and shuttles of that time. Here is where his passion started. This was a dream, like the one that many children lived at the moment of the conquest of the space. Many children like my dad used to follow the launches very closely. Children that were happy with each success, that dreamed of going to space one day, and that cried with all the loses of those who never arrived. To him and to all these children I dedicate this post. To him especially for showing me his love towards the space and what its exploration represents for life on Earth.

On the 12th February I was going to be in Florida, and my idea was to see one of the planned launches in Cape Canaveral. But, unfortunately it was cancelled and I had to advance my visit to the Kennedy Space Center to the 11th February. I have to say that this was the most wonderful experience I had in Florida! It was amazing to be there! Only one hour from Orlando, my colleague Ulas and I went to the NASA space center for the day to see space rockets and crocodiles! yes, yes, crocodiles! The space center is inside a Natural Protected Area and one can see beautiful birds, pelicans, crocodiles, and even dolphins.

When I was in the space center, I entered one of the first tripulated rockets where a man could fit with some difficulties. I tried to imagine how it felt to be inside such a small place for a trip to the space... they were very brave! I talked to my friend in white, I saw the main NASA building where they put together the pieces for the launches and that has a painting on the wall of an American flag the size of a football field! And before leaving, I saw the beginning of the sunset from the rocket's garden.

And I came back to my hotel happy but pensive... like in a dream. I was thinking how all these people felt when they went to space to make this world a better place to live, to do research, find vaccines, cures for cancer, technological advances and many more things. Many never arrived, but they tried anyway and thanks to them, to each step in the way, the humanity has arrived a bit farther. The Kennedy Space Center honors all of them, those who arrived, and those who didn't. The most famous are those from the Apollo. The 1st and the 11th... The Apollo 1 because there was a fire during launch and the astronauts couldn't leave on time.

And the Apollo 11, which reached the moon. It was 1969, and it was unthinkable that we could reach the Moon, this was only in science fiction stories! Others reached the moon later on. Those in the Apollo 13 were not that lucky. Maybe they were because they came back alive, but they couldn't reach the moon, but came back in one piece even if they experienced many accidents during the trip.

I spent my day thinking about my dad and how much he would have enjoyed the place! And to be honest, in many occasions, my eyes were watering from the emotion only by thinking what he could have felt experiencing all this in real time even if through the TV. Because in that period of time, where the TV just appeared and it was still in black and white, it was dificult to believe that we could send men to space and even more difficult to send them to the moon! But all this happened and nowadays we have many more things happening. And what really captivated me is how all and each of them followed their dreams and fought to make them come true, even when it all looked like imposible and even if they risked their lives. We have a lot to learn from them, we should all follow our dreams as if we were children, with love and passion to what we do every day of our life.

Reflejos

Espejo al atardecer - Mirror at sunset

I can say now that I am starting to settle in this city. Yesterday I would have loved to go out with my camera, because of the nice weather (cold but sunny), but I needed some time to finally unpack my luggage completely. Today, I wanted to go out and take some pictures, but a black cloud didn't let me, therefore I continue to tell my adventures in Orlando from some weeks ago.

One of the fascinating things during my visit to Orlando was the reflection of the sky and building into the Lake Buena Vista, located in the resort. These are some of the pictures I took...

SPIE Medical Imaging 2009

Poster Session

This year, I got three papers accepted, two as posters and one as oral presentation. This was a lot of work to me, especially if we add the landing on a new country where things are quite different from what I am used to.

The conference went very well and it was very interesting. I was very happy because they awarded one of my posters with Cum Laude, as the best poster for the conference of Image Processing. It was a honor! Even if I ended the conference very tired because of all the effort done, it was totally worth it!

Reflections

From the snowed Philadelphia to the hot Orlando, this is how I made my transition to warmer lands on the 6th February and only for one week. It is easy to imagine how dizzy I was in the end to go from one side to the other as a migration bird. But at that moment, I had no other choice than leaving my luggage half unpacked in Philadelphia, and take a plane to Florida. The conference I was attending to was in Orlando, at one of the Disney World resorts. This is one of the good things of doing research, that I can visit wonderful places all-expenses paid.

To be honest, I didn't have much time to enjoy my surroundings, or to visit as many places as I wanted to, but the things I saw were amazing! Only the short walks from my room to the conference halls were full of images that used to take me to the dreams world. Therefore, even if work took the remaining energy I had, I can say that it was worth it to be there and see so many beautiful things. I will tell you more about all this really soon.
